The history of Strand’s began on December 20, 1955, in Ames, Iowa, when The Paint Spot was purchased by Carter A. Strand. This was the first Strand’s location. The three Strand boys, Steve, John, and Bill, grew up in the apartment above the store. At that time, Strand’s was a stocking distributor of Colorizer and Glidden Paint. The store in Ames was later operated by John Strand and Bill Strand until 1986. Steve Strand (2nd generation) purchased the Strand’s in Marshalltown in 1973 from the Glidden company when Carter S. Strand (3rd generation) was just three years old. There were just three employees at the Marshalltown store, and total sales in the first year were $198,000. The move to our larger location in Marshalltown occurred in 2002 after Strand’s purchased the Jocko’s Auto Parts location and completed the coatings warehouse construction project.

Today, Strand’s Industrial Coatings employs 13 people and provides industrial coatings and corrosion prevention recommendations to clients around the country. We’re a paint family. As a result, we’ve always been able to provide the best coating recommendations for our customers’ projects without restrictions from corporate ownership. That’s the benefit of getting to know Strand’s, your industrial coatings partner. Take a look at our team. We look forward to meeting you!
